The Blues Brothers was a funny movie that used the catch phrase "We are on a mission from God". No - we are not going to be watching this movie in our services this month but we are going to look at this theme of being on a mission from God.
The American culture is a changing landscape. It is quite different from the recent past. As the culture changes the Church sometimes struggles to connect with the changing landscape. Sociologists now refer to this period of Western history as Post-Christendom. The era where Christian tradition dominated cultural thought and understanding is almost gone. The Church is no longer at the center influencing the culture. The Church was unprepared for how accelerated and disorienting the pace has been of the rapid marginalization of the Church is Western society. So what do we do?
We go back to the origin of the Church...back 2000 years to it's originator, Jesus. Jesus gave his Church a great commission before his return to heaven. After Jesus crucifixion and resurrection - Jesus told his followers that they were his witnesses to share with the world Jesus' love and message of redemption and reconciliation. In Matthew 28 - Jesus gave his followers their mission. Make disciples of all people...by going, baptizing and teaching them. The Church needs to again embrace this mission with all it has and make this mission its priority again.
If you are curious about this mission, how it can change your life, or how you can get involved in changing the world around you...come and join us this month during our worship services. 9:00 and 11:00 - come and see the roots of a mission and movement that changed the world and will continue to do so.
