Advent is the special season of the church year where we remember the greatest gift ever given - the birth of Jesus. Advent means "Coming" or "Arrival". During this season we remember God's faithfulness to His promise to send the One who would bring salvation to the world. So we celebrate and remember Jesus' first coming over 2000 years ago...and look forward to Jesus' second coming when all will be made right.
This year we are going to look at the Christmas story in a different way. I have called my Advent series - "The Unconventional Christmas Series". We are looking at passages that are not the traditional scriptures of the birth narrative. Yet, these passages give us great insight into God's heart, God's plan and Jesus' life as the Messiah. Some of these passages are:
2Corinthians 9:15 - Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift.
Isaiah 49:6 - It is too small a thing for you to be my servant to restore the tribes of Jacob...I will also make you a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring my salvation to the ends of the earth.
Philippians 2:5-8 - Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: Who being in very nature God did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death, even death on a cross.
Galatians 4:4 - But when the time was perfect, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those under the law that we might receive the full rights of children.
These passages reveal God's heart, mission, purpose, hope and good news of Christmas. Come join us this Advent Season, these unconventional Christmas passages will be life changing as we learn about the One born that 1st Christmas.
